Custom domain setup: subdomain vs root domain
If you want to use a custom domain with your Milkshake website, we strongly recommend using a subdomain for the easiest setup. Connecting a subdomain is simpler and avoids additional technical steps required for using the root domain.
Subdomains vs. Root domains
A subdomain is an extension of your main domain that allows you to create separate sections of your website. It appears before your primary domain name in a web address.
For example:
Root domain:
yourdomain.com
Subdomain:
links.yourdomain.com
In this example, links
is the subdomain.
If you use a subdomain such as links
then you will need to share the URL, links.yourdomain.com
with visitors. Your Milkshake site will NOT be accessible at your root domain - yourdomain.com
.
What can I use as a subdomain?
You can use any word as your subdomain but we recommend using something short, easy to type and meaningful. We've used links
as the example because many Millshake sites are focused on sharing links.
Here are a few other great options:
bio.yourdomain.com – Perfect for personal branding pages
about.yourdomain.com – Great for an "About Me" page
portfolio.yourdomain.com – Ideal for showcasing your work
social.yourdomain.com – A hub for all your social media links
